Attack on Iwo Jima
A wreath and the National Colors along with the US Marine Corps Service Flag will be placed at the World War II kiosk located on the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial Grounds on 12 February to commemorate the United States Marine Corps’ successful amphibious attack on the Japanese held island of Iwo Jima. Capture of the island, which had two existing air strips, allowed allied forces to locate fighter squadrons on the island and to rendezvous with the longer range B-29 bombers as their escort for attacks on the Japanese mainland.
Marine Corps losses were high. Franklin D. Roosevelt was President.
There will be no ceremony.
